The project aims to establish passenger rail service in the Sakhalin Region using hydrogen fuel cell trains and supporting systems.
The project will include the delivery of two hydrogen-powered passenger trains and the construction of a hydrogen fueling station. The plan is to expand the fleet of hydrogen trains to nine units, replacing the existing diesel trains with eco-friendly ones.

Implementation involves the following stages:
- By the end of 2026Assembly of two hydrogen train sets and certification procedures at the manufacturer's plant (JSC Transmashholding)
- In the 2nd quarter of 2027Delivery of two hydrogen trains and a mobile hydrogen refueling station to Sakhalin Island, placement at a technological site (JSC Russian Railways)
- By the end of 2028Conducting controlled tests of trains with the development of hydrogen refueling elements and operation in hybrid energy generation mode using hydrogen fuel cells (JSC Transmashholding, JSC Russian Railways)
- From January 2029Launch of two hydrogen trains into commercial operation, organization of full-fledged passenger routes on Sakhalin Island (JSC Russian Railways)
